Limescale is a mainly a problem for people in hard water areas. Water is determined as 'hard' if it has high levels of minerals, such as calcium, limestone and magnesium. These minerals are absolutely harmless to our health (some are even beneficial and is why mineral water is called such) but they can form a hard, whiteish, chalky deposit, known as Limescale.
While harmless, limescale forms in kettles, boilers, toilets and washing machines. A furry kettle will make our tea taste horrid whilst limescale will damage washing machines, toilets and water systems.
Unfortunately most methods for limescale removal involve harsh chemicals, these are not great for the environment and most of us I'm sure would rather not use them. However, there are eco-friendly limescale removal methods that allow you to remove limescale without harsh chemicals.
Natural ingredients like vinegar and borax (a natural salt available from some chemists and hardware shops) are incredibly good at getting rid of the hard mineral deposits.
A little elbow grease is also a good method of removing limescale especially with a scouring brush but this can damage surfaces.
However the best methods for natural limescale removal is preventing its build up in the first place.
Expensive water softener devices are available although they can be quite expensive. They work by magnetizing the water that attracts the minerals preventing them from entering the house.
However, far cheaper and simpler devices do a similar thing. Magnetic balls are available at relatively low cost insert into a washing machine or dishwasher and attract and can prevent limescale build up in the machine.
Similar devices are available for toilets too. They drop in the cistern and can prevent you having to remove limescale from the toilet bowl. These genius devices are simple, inexpensive and prevent limescale removal without harsh chemicals.
